An Outline of the early Gilaki Grammar

Little description, let alone analysis, has been provided of the earlier stages of Gilaki, a Caspian language of northwestern branch of Iranian languages family. With the discovery of a manuscript from 14th century, consisting in Sharafshāh Dulāi’s Divān (collected poems) in 1970s, however, linguistic basic raw material required for such investigation is now at our disposal. Having introduced the lexical structure of the early Gilaki based on Sharafshāh's Divān (Sharif 2020), in this article, I set out to provide a brief grammatical outline of the early Gilaki based on the text in Divān. To this end, after introducing the manuscript and looking at its orthography as well as sound system, I examine different grammatical categories including noun, pronoun, adposition, verb, and their corresponding dependants. I will also reconstruct some unattested forms out of existing partial paradigms in Divān. Finally, I make a comparison between early Gilaki in terms of its possible belonging to the two main branches of new Gilaki, namely western and eastern Gilaki.
