چکیده مقاله
Considering the importance and interactional consequences of the appropriate use of politeness markers in proper communication and given the fact that politeness markers are frequently used in daily interactions of Iranian Persian speakers, this study examined the distribution of linguistic politeness markers in the Persian language based on House and Kasper’s (1981) politeness taxonomy. To this end, 31 Iranian university students were selected and given a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) to elicit data related to the speech act of request. Then, 744 responses were thoroughly analyzed to determine the type and frequency of politeness markers. The results showed that the speakers of the Persian language used several categories of politeness structures including politeness markers, consultative devices, and understaters, as well as various types of supportive moves, especially grounders, to make the appropriate form of requests. The findings also corroborated the pragmatic differences between languages and cultures in terms of politeness marker patterns and linguistic forms. This stud has implications for pragmatics researchers, Persian language teachers, and materials developers.
